Identity Development & Life Transitions
Are you starting to wonder if the roles, beliefs, or labels that once defined you still feel true today?
Has your life been touched by a major event like a death, divorce, relocation, or career change?
Are you struggling to move forward, feeling unsteady or unsure of who you are in the midst of change?
Even transitions that seem positive, like starting college, getting married, or becoming a parent, can bring unexpected stress, confusion, and emotional overwhelm.
Life transitions can leave you feeling stuck or vulnerable. These moments often shake the foundation of your identity and force you to reevaluate the roles you play, your values, and the relationships around you. While change is inevitable, it can feel isolating or disorienting without support. Therapy offers a space to slow down, process what is happening, and find new ways to navigate the challenges that come with major life shifts.
Some of the most common life transitions I support clients navigate include:
- Marriage, parenting, or adjusting to a new family role
- Breakups, separation, or divorce
- Death of a loved one or other major grief
- Infidelity recovery or rebuilding trust
- Questioning life’s meaning, spirituality, or direction
- Relocation or financial change
- Serious illness, disability, or caregiving responsibilities
- Retirement or adjusting to an empty nest
- Aging-related concerns or the loss of independence
- Moving away to college or adjusting to university life
- Starting your first professional job or making a career change
Even difficult change has the potential to spark positive growth. Life transitions invite us to see what we are capable of, to develop new coping skills, and to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our relationships. In therapy, I help clients move from feeling overwhelmed or stuck to feeling more grounded, capable, and prepared for the next chapter of life.
Stepping into your new self
Alongside life transitions, many people experience seasons of identity development. This often begins with questions like: Who am I now? What parts of my life feel authentic to me? Which roles, beliefs, or labels no longer fit?
Identity development, or identity deconstruction, involves examining the layers that have shaped who you are today. Some aspects of identity are consciously chosen, while others come from family, culture, religion, or societal expectations. When these layers no longer feel aligned, it can create confusion, grief, or a sense of being lost. Therapy provides a safe and reflective space to explore these questions and begin creating a version of yourself that feels authentic and whole.
Common areas explored in identity development therapy include:
Roles and expectations: Noticing how family or social labels like “caretaker,” “peacemaker,” or “overachiever” have shaped your life and deciding which ones still resonate with you today.
Cultural or gender identity: Questioning the norms and expectations you were raised with and exploring how they align with who you are now.
Spiritual or religious beliefs: Reflecting on faith or values that once guided you and deciding which beliefs feel true in your current life.
Career identity: Examining your sense of self outside of your job title or achievements, especially during burnout, career changes, or retirement.
Grief and letting go: Acknowledging the natural grief that comes with leaving behind old roles, relationships, or communities that once defined you.
Growth and authenticity: Discovering new layers of yourself, embracing roles and values that reflect your present-day self, and cultivating a life that feels aligned and self-directed.
Identity development can be challenging and emotional, but it is also deeply rewarding and fulfilling. Therapy offers a space to process the grief of letting go, celebrate new discoveries, and integrate the parts of yourself that feel most authentic. The process of shedding old layers and embracing new ones can lead to greater self-awareness, stronger relationships, and a sense of peace in living as your truest self.
